Empowering Adult Learner Agency

Empowering Adult Learner Agency

HOW DO WE DEVELOP a school culture where the learning of every child and every teacher is a focus and a priority? Building learner agency is a vital foundation for creating an inquiry culture in a school. Learner agency can be defined as ‘having the power combined with choices to take meaningful action and see the results of your decision’ (Inspiring Inquiry, 2020).

How can we inclusively ensure this applies to all learners in the school – adults and students alike? Key to achieving this is the idea that ‘schools can’t become the best places for students to learn and grow unless we make them the best places for teachers to learn, work and grow’ (Hansen, n.d.). So, what’s the ‘new story’ of adult professional learning we want to embed and create for our teachers in our schools? What foundational components need to be present to create such a learning culture, one that is focused on building powerful collective efficacy?

From our research and collaborative work with schools nationally and internationally, we propose there are four key foundations to build a culture of truly collaborative adult learner agency.
