Are you ready to make a real difference in the teaching and learning of mathematics for each and every learner in your school?  Instructional and culturally relevant leadership is a way for every leader to help all teachers lift their students to create a more equitable world. To meet the vision of all students learning mathematics at high levels, leaders must take instructional leadership actions that support rigorous, engaging and culturally relevant mathematics instruction for every student.

 

CHALLENGES

Leading mathematics in a school is not an easy task. It requires a clear vision, a strong curriculum, a supportive culture, and effective professional development. Some of the challenges that mathematics leaders face are:

  • Ensuring PD allows teachers to stay abreast of the latest pedagogical strategies, curriculum changes and technological advancements
  • Facilitiating collaboration among staff to share best practice, resources and highly effective instructional strategies
  • Promoting equity in maths education by addressing access to resources and the like among diverse student populations
  • Finding innovative ways to engage and motivate students and cultivate a positive attitude towards maths
  • Implementing inclusive practices that differentiate and accommodate students with special needs, EALD learners and other groups
  • Effectively using data to inform instructional decisions and track student progress.

SOLUTIONS

The importance of mathematics education for all students, both in everyday life and in the workplace, has never been greater. Realising the vision of high-quality mathematics education for all students, as described in recognised Principles and Standards for School Mathematics, requires the active participation of everyone in the education community, including administrators as instructional leaders.

*Instructional Leadership Coaching will involve job-embedded coaching, utilising the Leadership Capability assessment completed by the school Principal at the beginning of the program. This data will drive and determine the particular areas of opportunity that the school leaders decide to focus on, with regards to instructionally leading a whole school focus on high-quality, effective Mathematics teaching and learning.

WORKSHOP 1 – ‘Laying the Groundwork’

HOW DO ADULTS + STUDENTS LEARN MATHEMATICS BEST?
  • Reflect on own instructional leadership capabilities – strengths and opportunities
  • Reflect on and examine leadership actions required for developing a shared vision and culture of highly effective Maths instruction based on equity and excellence
  • Consider implications of supporting the implementation of NCTM’s Effective Learning and Teaching Practices and the Australian Mathematics Curriculum
  • Consider practical steps in creating and leading a culture of learning in schools
  • Share and analyse the neuroscience of the learning process as well as the importance of learning transfer
  • Explore the needs of students in the learning process

WORKSHOP 2 – ‘Instructional Leadership’

WORKSHOP 3 – ‘Creating a Math Discourse Community’

PLANNING + DESIGNING POWERFUL PROFESSIONAL LEARNING THAT IMPACTS STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT
  • Explore highly effective and impactful Maths professional learning designs
  • Consider specific features of differentiated professional learning
  • Explore various professional learning designs to support beginning teachers as well s those new to a school
  • Putting It All Together: Developing a whole school Professional Learning Framework to build coherence, collective efficacy and maximise student outcomes

INSTRUCTIONAL LEADERSHIP COACHING*
